A Parking Lot Concert

The Songs of Praise, a tour group from Hyles-Anderson College led by Dr. and Mrs. Pete Cowling, was singing at the White Oak Baptist Church of Stratford, Connecticut. After eating after the service with Pastor and Mrs. Mike Peslak, we were unloading at the motel where we were staying that night when a group of men drove by and said “hello.” Dr. Cowling said, “If these guys park and walk by, you are going to sing for them.” In a few moments they did walk by, Dr. Cowling stopped them and we discovered they were from Brooklyn, New York and were “grips.” Their job is to build and create sets for movies, television shows, and videos. They do many of these in Connecticut because of the tax break in this state. Dr. Cowling asked if they would like a gospel song, and they said they would. The girls sang and Dr. Cowling shared the plan of salvation with the men, but they did not pray with him. However, Allison Vignere spoke individually with two of the men, and they prayed aloud in front of the other men to accept Christ. Dr. Cowling asked if they would mind having a picture made with the girls, and they seemed pleased to do so. The men requested another song which the girls sang. Dr. Cowling got their Email address so he could send them a picture, and he wrote down each of their names so he could pray for them. One man said, “I want my name at the top of the list.”

Dress for Success

By Frieda Cowling

One Saturday morning the Songs of Praise tour group was out bus calling with Pastor Rick Yancy and his family. The tour girls were wearing black skirts and blue polo shirts as they knocked on doors going two by two down the street. While talking to the mother of some of the children who wanted to ride the bus to church the next day, we explained the benefits of the children going to church on the bus. After talking to the lady about the details of riding the bus, we asked if she had any more questions we could answer for her, to which she replied, “I do have one question. When my children ride the bus tomorrow, do I have to make sure they are wearing black and blue?”
Wearing matching tour outfits does make an impression!

Memorial Weekend Memories

By Mrs. Cowling

On a beautiful, sunny, seventy-degree Saturday before Memorial Day, Dr. Cowling and the Songs of Praise tour group from Hyles-Anderson College pulled into a rest area next to four Iraq War veterans from Indiana on their way to Washington, D.C. They said they would enjoy a song, so the girls sang for them, and had pictures made with them beside their motorcycles. Two of them asked us to email them a picture. One of the bikers whose name was John said that he believed the Bible, but was not sure he would go to Heaven when he died. He agreed to let me show him from the Bible what had changed my life. After listening to the verses of the Roman Road, John bowed his head and prayed the sinner’s prayer accepting the gift of eternal life. He promised to look up the verses in his Bible when he got home. As we drove away, all four men thanked us for singing to them.

Dr. and Mrs. Cowling Celebrate 25 Years of Traveling the Country

This year marks the twenty-fifth consecutive summer that the Cowlings have traveled the country representing Hyles-Anderson College. If you will be in a church where they will be visiting this summer, please help us in congratulating them on twenty-five wonderful years. Thank you, Dr. and Mrs. Cowling!

The Summer Tour Groups Hit the Road

The Saturday before Memorial Day, all of the tour groups gathered together for a breakfast with Dr. Wendell Evans, President Emeritus of Hyles-Anderson College. It was a wonderful time as the groups gathered together for the last time before they would leave for the summer. With excitement high, the groups enjoyed a delightful breakfast, said their goodbyes, loaded up the vans, and “hit the road.” Seven groups are traveling this summer. Please join us in prayer for safe travels and the blessing of God on their endeavors.
